The Daily Crucible | Monday, August 22, 2022

Again, the Labour Party (LP) has warned Professor Pat Utomi against acting in any manner that translates to usurping the office of its National Chairman, Barr. Julius Abure.

LP said the purported appointment of one Dr. Fabian Ihekweme as the party's Presidential Campaign Council in Imo State by Prof. Utomi lacks the backing of the party's constitution and guidelines, describing Utomi's action at the Banquet hall, Immaculate Royal Hotel, PH Road, Owerri, as a "joke taken too far."

Prof. Pat Utomi is the leader of National Consultative Front (NCFront), an umbrella body of '3rd Force' Political Alternatives that adopted LP as its political party for 2023 general elections.

In a statement made available to The Daily Crucible by Chief Clement Ojukwu, the LP National Organizing Secretary, he clarified that LP has not made such appointment or inaugurated any presidential campaign council at the national or state level, declaring also that all appointments in respect of Campaign Council are the exclusive function of party's National Working Committee(NWC) as led by the National Chairman.

According to Ojukwu in the statement, announcement of any appointment made falls within the purview of the National Publicity Secretary as directed by the  National Chairman, Barr. Julius Abure.

He therefore cautioned Pat Utomi and his co - travellers to acquaint themselves with the LP Constitution and guidelines, and allow themselves to be properly informed and guided accordingly.

The LP statement in full:
Our attention has been drawn to the news intercepted through news medium that one Dr Fabian Ihekweme has been appointed as Imo Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council by Prof Pat Utomi at the Banquet hall, Immaculate Royal Hotel, PH Road, Owerri

It's not undisputed that Labour Party has not made such appointment or inaugurated any presidential campaign council both at the national or otherwise.

All appointments in respect of Campaign Council are the exclusive function of Labour party National Working committee as led by National Chairman  Bar Julius ABURE  LP and announcement made by the National Publicity Secretary as  directed by the  National Chairman

For emphasis and clarity :

Article 14 sub section 1(a) of the Labour Party Constitution states as follows;

" The National Chairman shall give leadership to the Party and shall preside over all meetings of the National Executive Council and the National Working Committee of the Party.

And in Article 14 sub -section 9(d), it is the duties of the National Organizing Secretary to organize campaigns and related issues thereof.

This Constitutional provision quoted above vested the power of all appointments and leadership only to the person and the office of the National Chairman through the National Working committee or National Executive Council (NEC)

 LP now uses this opportunity to sound the final  note of warning to Prof Pat Utomi or group of persons and all support groups that the LP is guided by the Constitution in all its activities and as such all members of the Party as well as interested members of the Public presently in LP should desist from all sort of hasty dealings, and from hence take serious caution. People must obey the Constitution of the Labour Party and be guided by the party directives with respect to the 2023 general elections.
