The pair  - Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice Nwanneka, who were arrested by Metropolitan Police after being caught in
conspiracy to facilitate travel with a view to exploitation of a child's organ, were earlier remanded in custody.

Ekweremadu was a former Deputy Senate President and had aspired to govern his Enugu State in 2023 but had not yet been  able to get a governorship ticket of any of the nation's mainstream political parties for the office.

"A man and a woman have been charged with conspiring to arrange to bring a child to the UK to harvest organs.

"Both have been remanded in custody and will appear at Uxbridge Magistrates' Court later on Thursday(today), the Metropolitan Police said.

The Met added that the child has been safeguarded, according to Dailymail in its report.

The investigation was launched after detectives were alerted to potential offences under modern slavery legislation in May 2022, the force said.
