Justice Tanko Muhammad has resigned as the Chief Justice of Nigeria but his resignation is still a matter of uncertainty in some quarters.

Channels Television which cited some sources, confirmed that Justice Tanko resigned on Sunday night on the grounds of ill-health.

But the Special Adviser on Media and Communication to CJN, Ahuraka Yusuf Isah, said, “All I know is that he’s going to declare open a workshop this morning at the NJI (National Judicial Institute).”

However,  Justice Olukayode Ariwoola is the most senior of the nation's Supreme Court justices with the retirement of Justice Mary Odili recently.

Olukayode will be the next acting Chief Justice of Nigeria after the  Senate’s confirmation.

President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to swear him as Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) as successor to Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad who, reportedly, resigned some hours ago on health grounds.

Justice Ariwoola will be sworn-in today by 2pm, according to some  competent sources.

Born on  22 August 1958,  Justice Ariwoola  was formerly a Justice of the Court of Appeal and was elevated to the Supreme Court bench.
