Bandits Bomb Catholic Church In Ondo, Kill Scores

Gunmen suspected to be bandits have struck at St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, headquarters of Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State, killing over 50 people, including worshippers and passersby.

Owo is the hometown of the Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu.

The assailants who attacked worshippers during service, opened fire on them.

Witnesses said the gunmen stormed the church during service and started shooting sporadically.

Explosives were also detonated by the gunmen inside premises of the church.

The explosion triggered a stampede and chaos in the church with fear - stricken worshippers struggling for possible escape routes while the scoundrels sprayed them sporadically with bullets.

A video in circulation depicting the horrifying attack showed many - women and children lying in a pool of blood. 

It was gathered that over 50 worshippers, mostly children and women were feared killed as a result of the terror attack

It was also gathered the injured and the dead were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre Owo, for treatment.

Health workers had  hectic time attending to the victims at the emergency unit of the hospital due to Inadequate hands on ground, forcing some of the victims to be evacuated to a private hospital.

Chief Medical Director (CMD) of FMC, Owo, Dr Liasu Adeagbo, said many medical personnel have been deployed to cater for the injured persons.

He said it was still too early to speak on the issue.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed the incident, saying the command had yet to ascertain the cause of the attack and the number of casualties.

“The Commissioner of Police is on his way to the scene to ascertain the cause of the incident. We have been hearing so many things about it but I will get back to you, she promised.”

However, on its official Twitter handle, the Ondo State Police Command tweeted: “The Ondo State Police Command is aware of the attack at Owo. We will give you the full details of the incident later. We want to implore the people of the state to be calm as all security apparatus is currently active to ensure peace in this area.

“The CP has deployed the anti-bomb squad at the scene and efforts are being intensified to arrest the perpetrators.”

 Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned the heinous killing of worshippers at the St Francis Catholic Church, Owa-luwa Street, Owo.
The President said only fiends from the nether region could have conceived and carried out such dastardly act, adding that eternal sorrow awaits them both on earth here, and ultimately in the hereafter.
President Buhari mourned the dead, condoled with their families, the Catholic Church, and the Government of Ondo State, charging emergency agencies to swing into action, and bring succor to the wounded.
“No matter what, this country shall never give in to evil and wicked people, and darkness will never overcome light. Nigeria will eventually win,” the President said in a release by Femi Adesina, his  
Special Adviser on Media and Publicity.
