Former Anambra state governor, Willie Obiano attempted to use a court order to stall his arrest at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport(MMA) in Lagos.

Obiano who rushed out of the inaugurationon ceremony of his predecessor, Charles Soludo, on Thursday around 3pm, allegedly in a bid to flee Nigeria and ward off a web of operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commissioner(EFCC) stalking him, was stopped at the MMA shortly after a private jet had dropped him in Lagos from the newly opened Anambra International Cargo Airport, Awka.

The planned journey to the US was botched as while he was going through immigration formalities, officials of the nation's secret police - Department of State Services (DSS) accosted Obiano and informed him that there was an instruction to stop, arrest and hand him over to the EFCC.

Sources said the former governor who thought he had  enough measures in place against any obstacle on his way, pulled from his bag, a court order stopping the EFCC from arresting him and showed it to the DSS officials but they refused to listen.

It was learnt the DSS officials advised Obiano to present the order to the EFCC instead.

The secret police quickly alerted the anti - graft agency officials who eventually take him into custody.

For Obiano, it was sad way of leaving office. Hours earlier, the former banker witnessed an unpleasant scene while Soludo's inaugurationon lasted as his wife, Ebelechukwu and Bianca, widow of late Igbo leader, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu brawled with Bianca Ojukwu slapping her over vulgar language.

However, Don Adinuba, the state commissioner for information at the time, said the issue between the governor and the EFCC was orchestrated by individuals in high places who “unsuccessfully canvassed for emergency rule” in the state during the build-up to the November 2021 governorship poll.
