Detained Yoruba Nation campaigner, Sunday Adeyemo also known as Sunday Ighoho, has been released in Benin Republic.

Sunday who was arrested by the Benin Republic authority while fleeing Nigeria for a European country, was released on Monday barely 8 months after and handed over to Yoruba Nation arrowhead and leader of the Umbrella body of Yoruba Self-determination Groups, Ilana Omo Oodua Worldwide, Prof. Banji Akintoye.

This was made known in a statement by the group’s Communications Secretary, Maxwell Adeleye.

Akintoye described the release of Ighoho as victory of truth over darkness in Yorubaland.

Athough he is out of prison, but it is not yet Uhuru for the Yoruba Nation agitator as he cannot leave Cotonou, Benin Republic for Nigeria any time soon.

Igboho's lawyer Yomi Aliyyu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), said the embattled secession agitator was only released from jail for medical reasons.

He said Professor Wole Soyinka and leader of Ilana Yoruba, Professor Banji Akintoye played roles in the momentary freedom granted Igboho.

Aliyyu made the clarification in a message to Igboho supporters, which he posted on Facebook on Monday night.

“I am to inform all the followers of Chief Sunday Adeyemo a.k.a Igboho Oosa that he has been released from prison to his medical practitioners under the agreement that he should neither leave the medical centre nor Cotonou for any reason.

“Praises should be given to two prominent Yoruba personalities to wit Prof Wole Soyinka and Prof Akintoye for this turn around in our client’s matter.”

Sunday Igboho was arrested on July 19, 2021, along with his wife Ropo. He was on his way to Germany where his family is based.

The wife was freed earlier.
