No fewer than 240 inmates of Nigeria Correctional Service(NSC) have escaped from Kogi state, north central part, following overnight jail break facilitated by gunmen.

The heavily armed gunmen stormed the Kogi NCS facility, attacked it and  freed scores of the inmates.

The gunmen invaded the prison, which had 294 prisoners in custody at the time, including 224 pre-trial detainees, according to prison  authority spokesman, Francis
 Enobore.

Enobore said the attackers struck about 2245 GMT on Sunday and  “engaged the armed guards in a fierce gun battle.”

“The medium Security Custodial Centre in Kabba, Kogi State, has been attacked by yet to be identified gunmen and 240 inmates forcefully released,” Nigeria’s correctional service spokesman.

The Assistant Inspector-General of Police Zone 8, Ayuba Edeh, also  confirmed the jail break on Monday, said the State Commissioner of Police and other heads of security would meet to put the situation under check.
