The Daily Crucible

The Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, Governor Dapo Abiodun, former governor of the state, Chief Segun Osoba, and stalwarts of the party revalidated their membership in Ogun State on Tuesday.

Vice President Osinbajo flagged off the party membership registration and revalidation exercise in Ikenne,  Ikenne  Local Government Area of the state.

It was witnessed by the governor of Niger State and National Chairman of APC Registration and Revalidation Committee, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello and other dignitaries.

Speaking during the event at Egunrege Ward 1, Ikenne town, Prof Osinbajo said the registration and revalidation exercise is important because it offers opportunity to have a credible roll of party members.

He said it will help the party to reach members  from the polling booth level all the way to the wards, local government, and federal constituencies.

He explained that the people must be reached because they constitute the party and derived its strength from the  grassroots with focus on the welfare, prosperity and wellbeing of all the people.

Osinbajo said: "Party members must therefore understand their importance in the scheme of things. They must fully understand party’s philosophy and programs, they must be actively mobilized to participate in, propagate and support government policies and programmes".

He disclosed that despite being in government at the most challenging time in history worsened by Covid-19 pandemic and series of security challenges, the APC government has continued to put in place programmes and policies that are tailored towards improving on the well-being of the people.

He said that aside the various microcredit schemes, payroll support program, the Npower, the 774000 jobs programme, there is also a N75bn Youth Fund as well as mass housing scheme, mass agriculture, solar home systems for 5m homes among others.

The Vice President explained that though the security challenges confronting the nation are not insurmountable as efforts are intensified on "prosecution of  all those who have been arrested for kidnapping, banditry and all other forms of criminalities".

He said that there must also be evidence that justice is being done and that these are  achievable by stronger collaboration between the Police, States Ministries of Justice and the Federal Ministry of Justice.

Osinbajo said "with the newly appointed Service Chiefs, we have a fresh set of eyes,  intellect , and skills and a fresh look at strategies against the insurgency in the North East , as well as  banditry and kidnapping elsewhere. In this new approach much greater emphasis is being placed on technology for surveillance, intelligence gathering and attack.

He emphasised the need to put in place a state police structure to fight the problem of insecurity  saying "in the meantime we must speed up and  strengthen the community policing structures, States must continually train, educate and formalize their local security structures so that they complement the Federal law enforcement agencies. Policing must be a collective effort."

The Vice President has however warned against act capable of  destroying the unity and peace  of the country.

"We must resist any attempts to destroy the unity of this country. Our people have lived and worked together for decades. While we must attend to the  the cries of communities for justice, equity and fairness we can do so within this same union.  Ultimately we are stronger together than apart," he said.
He expressed satisfaction that the APC registration and revalidation exercise in the state had been very smooth and peaceful with all the materials distributed and the processes followed closely, even as he beckoned on all who wanted progress, prosperity abundance and justice to prevail in the state and Nigeria  to register as members of the APC as it  remains the vehicle to move the country to it's next level of greatness.

The Vice President afterwards, had his membership registration revalidated by Prince Segun Awomuti, the Chairman of Ikenne ward 1, Egunrege.

Welcoming the party faithfuls earlier to the event, the governor of the state, Prince Dapo Abiodun assured that the exercise would be all inclusive as it will allow many progressives residents of the state to join the party in their thousands.

Abiodun said already many members of opposition parties such as Allied Peoples Movement (APM),  Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and African Democratic Congress (ADC) have decamped to APC since he resumed office on May 29, 2019 saying the registration exercise would afford them the opportunity to officially register as members of the ruling party.

The governor said that the APC in the state would continue to throw its door open and be accommodating with a view to encourage more people to join and further strengthen it to remain victorious ahead of future elections.

The Governor, thereafter, proceeded to his Iregun Ward 3, Iperu Remo in Ikenne Local Government where his APC party membership was revalidated.

Speaking at the flag off, the governor of Niger State and the National Chairman of APC Registration and Revalidation Committee, Alhaji Abubakar Sanni Bello urged the APC members in the state to ensure that the exercise was peaceful saying that it was one task that must be done very well so as not to defeat it's essence which border largely on increasing the numerical strength of the members of the ruling party.

The former governor of the state, Chief Segun Osoba described the event as very historical as it was being done at the country home of the Late Sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo who he further described as the father of progressive politics in Nigeria.

Osoba who said that he has that assurance that the exercise would be successful in the state also called on people to come out in their large numbers and register for the APC as it's a party that remained committed to taking the country to higher ground.

Other dignitaries at the flag off exercise were the Deputy governor Engr Mrs Noimot Salako-Oyedele, the State Chairman of the party, Chief Yemi Sanusi, Sen Lawan Shuaib, Chairman, Southwest APC Registration and Revalidation Committee, Hon Olakunle Oluomo, Speaker of the State House of Assembly among others.
