Ndi Anioma Makes History Again As Ngozi Okonjo - Iweala Gets WTO Plum Job

Ndi Anioma - Anioma people in Delta State, Nigeria, made history again with the appointment of their illustrious daughter and sister, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala,  as the Director-General(D-G) of the World Trade Organization(WTO).

The Ogwashi - Uku born Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, 66,  was appointed to direct the affairs of the leading international trade body on Monday just as it works to sort out the complex disagreements over how to resolve cases involving billions in sales and thousands of jobs.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala's appointment is coming barely three weeks after another illustrious son of Anioma, Major-General LEO Irabor, was named Nigeria's Chief of Defence Staff by President Muhammadu Buhari.

WTO was established on the strength of the Marrakesh Declaration as heftily attested to, by 123 countries of the world in Marrakesh, Morroco, and subsequently came to existence in 1995.

Ngozi's appointment came after representatives of the 164 member countries approved her candidacy and certified her competent for the D - G job 

The appointment also followed the new United States President Joe Biden endorsement of her candidacy, which was  blocked by former President Donald Trump in preference for the South Korean candidate, who later stepped down. 

However, in their felicitations over the appointment, the elated Anioma people worldwide under the aegis of Ndi Anioma, said they remained happy that the foremost and giant International Organization ever established, found their daughter -  'Nwa Ada Anioma', Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala worthy for the job.

In a statement signed by 12 prominent sons and daughters of Ndi Anioma, including Elder Emeka Esogbue - Secretary, Ndi Anioma of Nigeria, expressed the confidence that the  'Nwa Ada Anioma' woud showcase Anioma people's attributes of hard - work and integrity in global engagement.

"We have no iota of doubt that she will once again, fly our Anioma people's flag of hard-work and integrity in this global assignment.

"With her 25 years of accomplished career with the World Bank where she rapidly and deservedly rose from 'Development   Economist' to the No. 2 position of 'Managing Director' with globally-acclaimed achievements, we owe our daughter infinite confidence and dependence in her ability to competently assist WTO, in her new role, to meet the objectives of the regulation of trade in goods, services and intellectual property between participating countries by providing them with necessary framework for negotiating trade agreements and  dispute resolution processes which are normally aimed at enforcing participants' adherence to WTO agreements and other forms of understanding necessary.

"Like many other Anioma sons and daughters with global success stories, we are joyous that Dr. Okonjo-Iweala is once again, not only an Anioma scorecard but a lustrious demonstration of the huge human resources in our Anioma nation. Obviously, the Anioma people have again and again, proven the engine room of mankind, nationally and globally, and in nearly every sphere of endeavour. 

"We, the Anioma people have through our illustrious daughter made history again, as the first woman ever and the first African to head the World Trade Organisation.

"We thank President Muhammadu Buhari, who mobilised Nigerians and the world to queue behind our Ada Anioma for the huge support and diplomatic efforts and interventions that birthed this glorious global appointment 

"We, the Anioma people through this channel of Ndi Anioma, the social cultural group of our people, express our immense gratitude to you all," the statement reads.

Earlier, President Muhammadu Buhari warmly felicitated with Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on her election as Director General of the World Trade Organisation, saying the elevation brought joy and more honour to the country.

President Buhari alao affirms that Dr Okonjo-Iweala, who over the years set major records of economic reforms in Nigeria as Minister of Finance, will excel in her new position and validate the global mandate of repositioning and strengthening the multilateral institution for the greater good of all.

"As the Harvard-educated and renowned economist takes up another onerous task of service to the world and  humanity, the President believes her track record of integrity, diligence and  passion for development will continue to yield positive results and rewards to mankind," Buhari said according to Garba Shehu, his Senior Special Assistant(Media & Publicity).
