Most Rev. Luka Becomes Auxiliary Bishop Of Minna Catholic Diocese

Most Rev. Luka Sylvester Gopep has been ordained the Auxiliary bishop of Minna Catholic Diocese, Niger State, on Saturday and that admits him into  membership of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria.

Until his elevation, he was the Vicar General of Nigeria’s Minna Diocese as Msgr. Luka Sylvester Gopep. He was appointed into the Auxiliary Bishop office by the Holy Father.

Earlier, the appointment was announced on Wednesday, December 9 and published by the Holy See Press Office.

Pope Francis also assigned him the Titular church of Muzuca in Byzacena.

Most Rev. Luka Sylvester Gopep hails from Nigeria’s Diocese of Pankshin. the 55-year-old Bishop was ordained a Priest in January 1998 for the Diocese of Minna.

The newly ordained Bishop has been serving as Vicar General of Bishop Martin Igwe Uzoukwu in the last 8 years as well as being  the Parish Priest of St. Christopher, Kwamba Parish of Minna Diocese since 2013.

He waa a Parish Priest in various Parishes of Minna Diocese in his about two decades of Priestly ministry, a Rector of Christ the King Minor Seminary, Gwada of Minna Diocese (1998-2001) and Director of Vocations (2004-2013).

By his ordination as an Auxiliary Bishop, he will serve as a full-time assistant to Septuagenerian  Bishop Uzoukwu who has been the head of Minna Diocese since 1996.

Initially designated as the Prefecture Apostolic of Minna on 9 November 1964, Minna was later elevated to the rank of a Diocese on 17 September 1973.

It was learnt that the Nigerian Diocese, which is under the Ecclesiastical Province of Kaduna, has an estimated 88,000 Catholic population spread across an area of 36,031 square kilometers based on 2018 statistics.
