Tanker Explosion Kills Two, Razes 35 Vehicles

Two persons have died while 35 vehicles on display for sale by roadside were completely razed when a truck conveying Diesel burst into an inferno after it fell on the Lagos - Ibadan expressway.

The accident which occurred at World oil bus stop corridor of the Lagos Ibadan expressway, also caused multiple vehicle accidents.

The driver of the truck and his attendant were said to have been consumed by the fire while one person escaped wih severe burns.

Operatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps(FRSC), Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps(TRACE), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps(NSCDC) and the Police were seen rescuing victims, clearing obstruction caused by the accident and directing traffic.

The TRACE  Public Relations Officer, Babatunde Akinbiyi, attributed the cause of the accident to loss of control probably due to over speeding or drowsiness on the part of the truck driver.

Akinbiyi said an injured person was rescued to Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu along with the dead.

"The accident occurred around 2:am in the wee hours of Saturday. We learnt the tanker was loaded with Diesel and couldn't confirm what led to it's falling on it's side...May be the driver was sleeping or over speeding before loosing control.

"However, the driver and the motor boy died in the ensuing inferno that engulfed the scene with about 35 vehicles (parked along the traffic corridor for sale and overnight ) burnt down.

"One  injured victim is presently confirmed and he has been taken to Olabisi Onabanjo Teaching Hospital, OOUTH, along with the dead victims (the driver and motor boy).The accident occurred around 2:am in the wee hours of Saturday," he said.
