EndSARS : Lagos To Probe Lekki Tollgate Shooting

From Godwin Akomah, Lagos

The Lagos State government on Tuesday  said it would probe reports of shootings at the Lekki Toll plaza  which attended the 24-hour curfew levied on Lagosians to curb the growing criminalities masquerading as #ENDSARS protests.

The alleged shooting by suspected security agents was said to have left tens of protesters injured both from gunshots and the ensuing stampede with about six  others feared dead.

Enraged Nigerians are wondering why a government that gives suspected terrorists second chance could watch while security agents opened fire on innocent and peaceful protesters, harming and maiming them in October, the nation's Independence month.

Already, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has condemned the reported shooting at #EndSARS peaceful protesters at the Lekki Toll gate, Lagos, by security agents, saying  it must stop immediately.

SERAP said under the Nigerian constitution, 1999 [as amended] and human rights treaties to which Nigeria is a state party, the authorities are obligated to respect and protect the right to life and security of the person, the rights to freedom of expression, association, and peaceful assembly of everyone, including peaceful protesters.

But Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, said the Lagos State Government would investigate the incident.

Omotoso made this known in series of tweets on Tuesday evening.

According to him, the government has ordered investigation into the incident.

He added Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has advised security agents not to arrest anyone as a result of the curfew.

“Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has advised the security agents not to arrest anyone on account of the curfew, which he urges residents to observe for the peaceful atmosphere we all cherish.

“He advises Lagosians to remain calm and not allow criminals, who have hijacked the noble protest of our gallant youths, to succeed in their evil plan of turning our dear State upside down.

“The Governor will do everything within his power to ensure that the lives of all Lagosians are protected at all times,” he said.
