Traditional Rulers in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area of Ogun State on Friday called for the immediate removal of the embattled Transition  Chairman of the Council, Femi Onanuga, for allegedly "disrespecting the traditional institution."

The monarchs from the area in unison, claimed that Onanuga was "not fit and proper person" to lead the minerals - rich Local Government, urging Governor Dapo Abiodun and Ogun State House of Assembly not to approve, renew or confirm tenure extension for him.

Ogun  Assembly had last week, confirmed the extension of 18 Transition Chairmen of the Local Government Councils effective from 19th July, 2020, while the confirmation of the Chairman of Remo North, Biodun Somoye and his Ogun Waterside counterpart, Femi Onanuga were stepped down.

The extension followed the presentation of the report of the Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs by the Chairman, Hon. Akeem Balogun, during Plenary.

Balogun, who cited names of members who were successfully cleared, subsequently moved the motion for the adoption of the report, seconded by Hon. Ganiyu Oyedeji, and unanimously supported by all the lawmakers through a voice vote.

The report partly reads: "the Committee however, did not recommend the extension of tenure for the Transition Committee Chairmen of Remo North, Hon. Biodun Somoye and Ogun Waterside Local Government, Comrade Femi Onanuga due to the fact that petitions received from the respective Local Government councils are still receiving the attention of the House."

"The Committee therefore recommended the extension of the tenure of eighteen (18) transition Chairmen Committees and committee members of Remo North and Ogun Waterside Local Government having been found eligible and suitable."

But addressing reporters at the Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, the Ojotumoro of Abigi, Oba Olusegun Ogunye, called for an outright removal of Femi Onanuga as the Transition Chairman of Ogun Waterside Local Government.

Ogunye, who spoke on behalf all traditional rulers in Ogun Waterside, was accompanied by three other colleague - monarchs -  the Osobia of Imakum Omi, Oba Kazeem Salami, Onirokun of Irokun Kingdom, Oba Buari  Balogun and
Elefire of Ifire, Oba Musa Adetokunbo Adeniyi.

The monarch said despite being advised separately by Governor Abiodun and the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Afolabi Afuape, to show remorse for his alleged disrespect to the traditional institution, Femi Onanuga failed to heed the advice.

He said:"This same transition chairman which all of us, the entire Obas in Ogun water side rejected.  We appealed to allow him to spend that transition period because he has mentioned it in the open that those of them that work from within.

"The Governor said that he should go round to the throne of every king and beg them, up till today, he has not done that.

"The Commissioner for Chieftaincy and Local Government also advised him that instead of all the insults and arrogance to all the kings,  why don't you go round and appeal to them. As if today that am talking to you,  the situation remains the same.

"The mother of this transition Chairman, insulted the institution of Ojotumoro of Abigi kingdom, and instead of the son who is the transition chairman, appealing and begging the Kabiyesi, he wrote a letter that was so derogatory to the institution of Obaship. He ought to have withdrawn that letter. So, arrogance is the other name of this man.

"The market woman and the entire people of Abigi rejected him and the entire Obas in Ogun water side Local Government rejected him. All the entire Obas, no exception, in Ogun water side Local Government said we don't want him.

"Right now as I speak to you,  the issue is before the Ogun State house of Assembly, the suspension of the transition chairman .

"We want him to be totally removed from office so that it's going to serve as deterrent to others that their are some institutions that must be respected and that is the institution of the Obaship.

"We are here to implore the entire members of the Ogun State House of Assembly not to confirm his continuation as the transition chairman, we also implore the Ogun State Governor not to approve his membership as transition chairman . He doesn't have any respect to the institute of the traditional council,

"As far as we are concerned, he is not not fit and a proper person to rule the local government.

"The governor asked the chief of staff to Shuaib investigate and report. As I speak, the Chief of staff has not called or invited the Obas to investigate on what has happened.

"The special adviser on political matters, Egbetokun who is also advising the state  government has probably not adviced the government on the step to take as regard the traditional institution and every other protocol (on this matter)."

Reacting,  Onanuga said he had issues with two of the traditional rulers  while carrying out his constitutional duty as Transition Chairman.

Onanuga ,  however,  said the matter had been resolved by the political leaders in the state and he had equally tendered apology to the monarchs.

He noted that he holds them in high esteem as    a cultured Yoruba man and would not join issues with people, he reckoned as, his reverred traditional rulers.

"They are my royal fathers,  I will not join issues with them. I have respect for the tradition.

"My political  leaders have intervened and this matter has been  settled on June 16. It was after that they took the matter to the House of Assembly.

"I have appeared  before the House Committee on Local Government and  Chieftancy Affairs. Personally, as Femi Onanuga written a letter of apology to all of them," he said.
