Justice Minister, Malami, Directs IGP To Provide Security To Anti - Obaseki Lawmakers

- The Daily Crucible

The political battle between 17 lawmakers of the All Progressives Congress(APC) in Edo State and Governor Godwin Obaseki over access to the state House of Assembly appeared to be tilting in favour of the APC legislators as an emerging sign shows that the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami  has given directive for security protection for them.

A letter believed to have emanated from Abubakar Malami Office showed that the Minister had ordered the Inspector General of Police to provide security for the 17 Edo APC  Lawmakers.

The letter dated August 5 followed a petition to his office by Idahosa-West Chambers, and in response, Malami noted that  the security measure is needed to avert a breakdown of law and order in the State.

The security measure would help the lawmakers to sit without threat.

The 17 lawmakers have thrown their weight behind the Party's  Governorship candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

They have been locked in a battle to access the Edo Assembly complex on Ring Road, Benin with seven lawmakers loyal to Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Obaseki was alleged to have ordered a truck load of ganite which were heaped at the entrance of the Edo House State of Assembly, ostensibly  to physically obstruct access to the complex by the 17 lawmakers.

This happened on Thursday just as the 17 lawmakers sat in secret location in Benin City and dethroned the Speaker Frank Okiye and his Deputy, installing Victor Edoror, who was removed in 2018, as the new Speaker.

There are fears that  the thickening plots by the 17 lawmakers, bordered on sacking Godwin Obaseki before the September Governorship election in the state.

Already, President Muhammadu Buhari received the APC Governorship candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, earlier today and tactfully endorsed him for the number one seat in the Heart Beat of the nation.
