                    Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu

From Heritage Odih, Abeokuta

Though the name Professor Abayomi Adelaja Arigbabu sounds poetical but the bearer is not a poet but a University administrator, Scholar, Researcher and  Mathematician, who is not a stranger to number.

The 4th Vice Chancellor of the nation's premier University of Education, Ogun State, turns 58 today, July 26,  and symbolically,  the numberis a manifestation of service, wealth of experience, knowledge, humility, focus, truth and integrity - all of which encapsulate the life of Abayomi Arigbabu.

Catherine Pulsifer, a renowned author of many books, including Wings of Wisdom, onced penned it that life isn't about one's age but about living, and then submitting that when one's birthday comes, one should  be thankful for the Year that has just past and anticipate with a happy heart what the coming year will still bring.

As if Catherine had read his mind in advance, Prof. Arigbabu at 58 is full of appreciations to God for his mercies and Grace upon him at 58 and much more, he is looking forward to the  more and better things God will enable him bring to pass at TASUED in the coming year.

"Today is my birthday. It is special to me. I appreciate God for his goodness upon me and my household, for keeping me and my family and for what one has been able to achieve despite all odds. There were challenges but God in his mercies helped me to keep marching forward.

"At 58, I'm looking forward to better days and more good things to happen at TASUED while I serve as the Vice Chancellor. We are praying to God that the Pandemic should be over and that the lessons learnt should propel actions for the betterment of the university, the state and the nation," he told The Daily Crucible.

The scholar who succeeded Professor (Mrs) Oluyemisi Obilade, was confirmed, on March 2018, a  substantive TASUED Vice Chancellor by the institution's Governing Council.

Prior to the confirmation, the seasoned administrator and erudite scholar was on acting capacity with the expiration of the tenure of Obilade, whose 5-year tenure came to an end on January 10th, 2018.

It is being said that Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu’s outstanding performance during the screening interview for the office was unparalleled and the Council didn't hesitate to recommend him as qualified for the Vice Chancellor of the University because of his wealth of experience and intellectual fecundity - the attributes, that have continued to help him move the University forward.

It is worthy of remembrance that on a day in 2012 while delivering the institution's second  inaugural lecture, Arigbabu, a Professor of Mathematics Education and Dean, College of Science and Information Technology at the time, did dazzle his audience when he gave insight into why there exists a big disconnect between the mathematics learnt in the classroom and that which is used outside in everyday human activities.

Speaking on the theme: “Beyond The Cuboid: Imperatives For An Aids-Free, Mathematically Literate Society,” he examined the day-to-day individual actions, illustrating it with real life examples and posited that methodologies could be utilized to effectively teach mathematics for better understanding.

He also used the occasion to demystify mathematics and mathematical concepts, and deftly demonstrated how he has continued to influence learners towards mathematics for over 25 years to the admiration of the Vice-Chancellor of TASUED at the time, Prof. Segun Awonusi, who hailed him for taking the audience through the history of the number game and explaining that the complexity of numeric representation needs not bully or scare  learners of the subject.

Interestingly, the university profiled him thus : Prof. Arigbabu holds a Bachelor of Science (Education) Degree in Mathematics (Second Class Upper) from the University of Lagos and Master of Science in Mathematics from the same University.

He later proceeded to the prestigious University of South Africa, Pretoria for his Ph.D in Mathematics, Science and Technology with specialisation in Mathematics Education.

As a Mathematician and Mathematics Educator, Prof. Arigbabu has been involved in Mathematics, Science and Technology (MST) Education and preparation programmes in Nigeria in the last two and a half decades.

In addition to this, he was a visiting Professor in the Department of Science and Technology Education, University of Lagos between January 2014 and January 2015.

As an erudite scholar and educationist par excellence, the new Acting Vice Chancellor has been a co-promoter/co-supervisor of Doctoral theses of the University of South Africa (UNISA) since 2006 , while he was also an External Examiner (of Doctoral theses) to Rhodes University, Grahamstown and Tshwane University of Technology in South Africa and the University of Ibadan.

Prof. Arigbabu belongs to numerous academic and professional associations, these include Mathematical Association of Nigeria (MAN), Science Teachers’ Association of Nigeria (STAN), Nigerian Mathematical Society (NMS), Southern African Association for Researchers in Mathematics, Science and Technology Education (SAARMSTE) and the Science Association of Nigeria (SAN) among others.

Also, Prof. Arigbabu, a Consultant to international journals as well as local and international organisations, is a Master Trainer on the United Nations Population FUND (UNFPA) and Family Life Education programme. His consultancy involvement includes Longman Plc, Learn Africa Plc, Pearson Educational Services, UK.
