70 - Year Old Woman Lands In Hospital After Rape By Man In Ogun

A  70 - year old woman has been rushed  to hospital in Ogun State for treatment after a 25 - year - old man identified as Wasiu Bankole burst into her residence, pinned the septuagenarian to the ground and raped her.

The suspect sexually assaulted the woman on Tuesday around 8pm while asleep in her house  at Abule Lemode in Ijoko area of Ogun State.

Wasiu later jumped off the victim,  abandoning his torch light, pair of shoes and clothes when a neighbour attracted by her screaming for help, struck him with a stick.

The suspect was arrested the following day, Wednesday, upon reporting the incident at the Agbado Division of the Ogun State Police Command.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, who made this known in a release, said the suspect claimed to have committed the crime under the influence of alcohol.

Abimbola stated: "The suspect was arrested following a report by the victim who reported at Agbado division that while she was sleeping in her house on the 2nd of June 2020, at Abule lemode area of ijoko at about 8 pm, the suspect suddenly broke into her room, held her down and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her against her consent. 

"The victim stated further that it was one of her neighbor who heard her screaming that came to rescue her by using a stick to hit the suspect at his back consequence upon which he jumped off her and ran away leaving his clothes, shoe and torchlight  inside her room.

"On the basis of the report, the DPO Agbado division, Superintendent of Police (SP) Kuranga Yero, dispatched detectives to look for the suspect and bring him to justice. The detectives succeeded in getting him arrested 24 hours after and brought him to the station.

"On interrogation, he confessed committing the crime but claimed to have acted under the influence of alcohol.

"The victim has been taken to the hospital for medical attention. Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Kenneth Ebrimson, has ordered the transfer of the suspect to the Anti - human trafficking and Child Labour unit of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department(SCIID) for further investigation and prosecution."
