Court Convicts Funke Akindele, Husband For Violating Social Distancing Order

Nollywood actresss, Funke Akindele - Bello  was on Monday brought before an Ogba Chief Magistrate Court in connection with organising a birthday party for her husband, Abdulrasheed Bello a.k.a. JJC Skillz last Saturday. The couple were there after convicted and sentenced to two weeks of Community service and a fine of N100,000:00 each.

This followed her arrest yesterday by detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Yaba, Lagos, after video of the party went viral on the social media. The Police also asked  Naira Marley, a musician, who was alleged to have attended the part to also report himself to the Police today.

The party was held  at the couple's residence situating within the Amen Estate Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos.

The gathering which the party engendered was adjudged to have violated the lockdown order of President Muhammadu Buhari and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State directive on social distancing which were put in place to contain the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Akindele was arraigned alongside her husband, Bello on a one-count charge before Magistrate Y.O. Aje –Afunwa and the couple were represented by  counsel Abayomi Alagbada.

The Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Moyo Onigbanjo (SAN) who was the prosecutor, told the court that Funke and her husband Bello, defied the directive of the Lagos state Governor when they hosted over 20 people in on spot at their Lekki home.

The charge dated April 6, 2020, number MIK/A/43/2020 signed by the Diector, Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) Yaquib Oshoala reads: "That you (1) Funke Akindele (2) Abdul Rasheed Bello on the 4th day of April 2020 at 9, Gbadamosi Close, Amen Estate, Ibeju Lekki in the Lagos Magisterial District gathered at the aforementioned address with over twenty persons contrary to the social distancing directives of Mr Governor of Lagos State made pursuant to Regulation 8(1)(a) & (b) and 17(1)“) of the Lagos State Infectious Disease(Emergency PreventionMegu/atian 2020 and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 58 Public Health Law Cap P16 Vol.9 Laws of Lagos State, 2015."


Funke and her husband, however,  pleaded guilty.

Magistrate Aje-Afunwa stood down  the case  for 30 minutes and went into her chamber and when the reconvened, the couple were found guilty of gathering contrary to the social distancing order.

Funke Akindele and her husband convicted and sentenced for violating Infectious Disease Emergency Regulations, 2020 as follows;

1. To pay fine if N100,00 each within 3 days;

2. To be isolated for 14 days in a place to be determined by the Ministry of Health, Lagos;

3. To undertake 14 days community service;

4. To submit names, phone numbers and addresses of all people who attended the party at their residence;

5. To visit 10 public places in Lagos to conduct awareness about dangers of Covid-19

Naira Marley, Gbadamosi etc should submit themselves for isolation and pay the fine into State coffer.
