Maryam To Die By Hanging For Murder Of PDP Ex - National Chair's Son

From Jane Okafor,

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on Monday found Maryam Sanda guilty of killing her husband, Bilyaminu Bello.

Ms Sanda  was sentenced to death by hanging by Justice Yusuf Halilu for her husband, Mr Bello's death, who was the son of a former national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Haliru Bello.

A mild drama quickly ensued as the judge pronounced Ms Sanda guilty - She attempted to bolt away from the court room while her relatives also slipped into a fit of shouting, creating an uproar perhaps to elicit sympathy.

And as the judge was leaving the Court, Sanda also blurted out: " Excuse me, Judge. I want to talk to you."

The Nigerian police arraigned her before Justice Halilu in November 2017  for culpable homicide.

While the trial lasted, Maryam Sanda through her counsel as well as oral evidence strived to convince the Court that her husband died of injuries sutained when he fell on Shisha pot during a fight between them.

But the judge dismissed Ms Sanda’s statement that her husband fell on a broken Shisha pot on the ill-fated day as a “smokescreen to deceive the court,” stressing there was compelling evidence to convict her.

He held that available evidence proved beyond doubt that the accused stabbed her husband with a kitchen knife with intent to ”kill.”
