I'm saddened by level of carnage on roads in Ogun  - Amosun

Governor Ibikunle Amosun has expressed sadness at the frequency and level of road traffic fatalities on roads within Ogun state corridors.

Amosun said he was particularly appalled by the latest report by the Nigeria Watch which in its analysis, ranked the state as the 4th among  syates in the country with highest road incidents and fatalities.

The Governor who made this known on Saturday at the 3rd annual TRACE Corps Commander's Conference in Abeokuta, the state capital, said there were 984 cases of road fatalities in the state between 2006 and 2014 according to the Nigeria Watch.

Amosun was represented by the Secretary to the state government, Taiwo Adeoluwa,  at the conference with the themed, 'Capacity building for TRACE Senior Officers: A system approach to human capital development to attain the goals of road safety vision 2020 agenda.'

He noted that the road fatalities have brought "sordid reputation" to the state and urged the state's traffic agency - TRACE, to put measures in place to reverse the trend.

He attributed the carnage on roads within the corridors of Ogun State to its peculiar location as the gateway to many states  of the Federation and neighbouring country of the Republic of Benin.

According to him, the state's strategic location informed why the roads - particularly the Lagos - Ibadan expressway and Lagos - Ore expressway, are two of the busiest ones in the country, hence the constant road accidents and attendant fatality.

He also cited the presence of mega religious organisations and institutions along the major roads in the state as contributory factor to unpleasant traffic occurrence.

He, however, disclosed that the state government would in no time, deploy technology to address traffic challenges on roads within the state.
