Deji Owolabi

The National Industrial Court sitting in Akure, Ondo State, has nullified the suspension of the Chairman and Secretary of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ilorin chapter, Dr. Kayode Afolayan and Dr. Solomon Oyelekan.

Afolayan and Oyelekan were suspended  by the management of the university over a year ago but the industrial  court, presided by Justice O.O Adebowale on Tuesday reversed the suspension.

The two academic unionists  were suspended by the university over whistle blowing in connection with alleged corrupt activities of the Varsity's immediate past Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdulganiyu Ambali.

The whistle blowing bordered on the alleged subversion of due process in the employment and promotion of a person close to Ambali among other irregularities.

But succour finally came the way of the duo as the court ordered that their salaries and allowances  be paid from the time of their suspension till date.

The court also awarded 20 per cent interest on the amount payable to them from the day of judgment delivery until it is fulfilled by the university.

An academic unionist who was in court during the proceeding on Tuesday morning, said  a cost of N500,000 was also awarded against the university too.
