Governor Dapo Abiodun has threatened purveyors of fake news in Ogun State with stiff punitive measures as punishment for  any one caught.

Abiodun said the State government was working with relevant agencies, including the ministry of justice,  on laws that would recommend stiff punitive measures against those involved in spreading fake news in the State.

The governor disclosed this at the Arcade Ground in Abeokuta while handing over Patrol vans and Motorcycles to the newly formed Joint Security Intervention Squad, set up to provide security to the people, particularly in Yewa axis of the State.

He frowned at the irreparable damage fake news was doing to the corporate existence of Nigeria, calling for collective efforts to stop it.

"We need to stop this proliferation of fake news because it is threatening our national security and I want to plead with our main stream media to verify their information before publishing.

"We are also working with the Ministry of Justice to ensure that we have a law in place that provides serious measures for people that are caught propagating fake news.

"The Governor observed that fake news has led to expanding the farmers/ herders’ crisis in the State, adding that, "we've also seen that the spread of fake news has become the order of the day. People have this pre-occupation of sharing news that they consider sensational without authenticating its genuineness."

He debunked report of Ogun State indigenes being refugees in the neighbouring country, as a result of the recent clash, maintaining that it would have attracted diplomatic moves between Nigeria and the country hosting the refugees, if the report was true.

Similarly, the Nigeria Union of Journalists Ogun state Council has vowed to deal with fake news peddlers in the State.

The state Council of NUJ which was reacting to alleged fake news being  spread by some online bloggers that thugs invaded its Iwe-Iroyin Secretariat located at Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta on Monday, said it would collaborate with relevant authorities to flush purveyors of fake news out of Ogun state.

The Secretary of the Union in the State, Comrade Ayokunle Ewuoso, conveyed this in statement sent to The Daily Crucible.

Ewuoso described the report by the affected bloggers as false, calling on the public to disregard the information.

"It is unfortunate that journalism profession is being threatened by the activities of these fake news peddlers, but as a Union, we will not relent in collaborating with relevant authorities in weeding out bad elements from the profession," Ewuoso stated.
