From Ayobami Ife, Abeokuta

Former Governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel on Tuesday night formally moved to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state and at the centre, after observing barely two years of break from partisan politics.

Daniel who ruled the Gateway State for eight years on the ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) from 2003 to May 28, 2011,  resigned from the party in March 2019 after serving as the Director-General, Atiku Abubakar Presidential Campaign Organisation for the 2019 Presidential election.

Reasons for quitting the PDP at the time
were  contained in a letter dated March 14, 2019, which he personally authored and addressed to National Chairman of the PDP, Uche Secondus,

During the last  governorship election in the State,  Daniel had openly identified with  Dapo Abiodun, then flabearer of the All Progressives Candidate (APC) in 2019 race, endorsed his candidature and mobilised his supporters and loyalists to vote him in .

However, on Tuesday night  at his Asoludero country home with Sagamu Govetnment Reservation Area, Daniel was received into APC by the state governor, Dapo Abiodun, Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, , Atiku Bagudu (Kebbi) and Abdullahi Ganduje (Kano), Niger State Governor, Abubakar Sanni Bello.

Bello who is the Chairman of APC Registration and Revalidation Committee, presented a broom, the emblem of APC to him and formally welcomed him into the party.

Bello added  that the National Chairman of APC Caretaker Committee, Mai Mala  Buni, and Bagudu would formally take Daniel to President Muhammadu Buhari later.

Bagudu who is the Chairman of APC Governors, described Daniel as a political colossus with good understanding of politics.

He said APC has grown bigger and better with his defection.

According to him, APC is happy to receive him.

Akeredolu described Daniel's defection as homecoming, and called on leaders of APC in the state to come together and build the party stronger.

Responding, Daniel said the decision to join APC was "well considered and thought out."

According to him, more than ever, Nigeria  needs leaders to come together and  speak with one voice in order to tackle challenges.

"In Ogun, no better time because we have a working governor and needs  support of all," Daniel said.

And earlier in short message to selected friends and supporters intimation on why he joined APC, Daniel stated.

“Dear Friends & Colleagues, pardon my short notice in informing you of my route to the APC which as you might have suspected started with my supporting Governor Dapo Abiodun during the last election.

"I have since experienced an avalanche of encouragement to come on board.
However in the last 48 hours things took a dizzying speed with the decision of the APC National Chairmans request to visit me at Asoludero on Wed with about 3 Governors.

"While planning for the visit Governor Abiodun also decided to visit me later today with another set of Governors later today. It therefore mean that I have finally been ‘captured.'

"I thought I should quickly brief the house before the news go viral. Thanks for your understanding."
