Waterways: Barge Trip From Onne to Onitsha Port Begins Soon

--- As Trial Barge Trip Ends On Successful Note

--- First Cargo From Maersk To Land At Clarion Terminal, Onitsha, December 2

All appeared set for commencement of barge trip from Onne port in Port - Harcourt to Onitsha  Port via waterways.

The trial run was conducted on Tuesday in Onitsha and it marked the successful completion of barge trip (carrying containers) from Onne Port to Onitsha Port.

There was also loading from Onitsha to Onne, for export. This will boost investments, decongest the ports in Lagos and possibly free the Apapa - Oshodi road of both gridlock and risk associated with falling - off containers.

Already, Maersk a major player in shipping is sending container ships direct from China to the Onne Port, without the need to first call at Lagos.

And when the ship berths in Onne, it will be offloaded and the containers routed to Onitsha Port where they will be barged down.

"Ship leaves Shanghai East Container Terminal, China on Sat October 10, arrives Onne Port Terminal on November  25.

"Cargo leaves Onne December 1, arrives Clarion Terminal, Onitsha, December 2," the Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Digital and New Media, Tolu Ogunlesi, tweeted on his official Twitter page.
