Ayobami Ife,  Abeokuta

National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on Wednesday appealed respectable traditional rulers in the country to assist the Federal Government (FG) in resolving matter between the FG and the academic staff Union of Universitiess (ASUU) so that students could return to schools soon.

NANS also expressed displeasure that the noble EndSARS protest had been hijacked by hoodlums and criminals, saying the Benin jail break, burning of Police stations, looting and extortion were a misrepresentation of the objective of EndSARS protest.

NANS National Public Relations Officer, Com.  Azeez Adeyemi, made this known while addressing reporters at the Secretariat of the Nigeria Labour Congress(NLC) in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

Azeez appealed to the traditional rulers to assist the President to resolve the matter between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universitiess (ASUU) so that students could return to school soon.

"The leadership of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) wish to use this opportunity to registered our total displeasure on the recent turns of activities of the EndSARS protesters which has been hijacked by hoodlums and criminals. The jail break, burning of police stations, attacking Governors convoy, looting, robbing and harassing innocent citizen in the name of ANTISARS protest were nothing more than misrepresenting the main focus of the agitations reform policing in Nigeria.

"As an organisation we frown at the level of unprofessionalism and impunity which has characterized the activities of the men of the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), while we appreciate the rapid response of the Federal Government of Nigeria through the office of the Inspector General of Police banning the activities of the SARS across the country in wake of the ongoing nationwide protests.

"Based on the recent violence activities of some criminals who are using the ENDSARS protest to cause mayhem, loot, jail break and other criminal activities which is giving the ENDSARS protesters bad image and making the struggle to loose the sympathy of average Nigerians, we hereby call on EndSARS protesters to organised themselves into a formidable structure with leadership and enter dialogue with Federal Government of Nigeria towards addressing all the concerns raise through the ENDSARS protest.

"May we equally use this opportunity to call on President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR to do more in the area of addressing all the concern raised by the ENDSARS protesters expedite actions towards implementing them. Anyone caught in the act of using the ENDSARS protest to perpetuate any criminal activities should be made to face the laws of the land.

"The leadership of NANS call on the Federal Government through the office of the Honourable Minister of Education and Honourable Minister of Labour and productivity as a matter of urgency to holistic address the ongoing industrial action by Aacademic Staff of Union of University ASUU and all Sister unions on our campuses to enable Nigerian Students returned to thier respective campuses."
