Tension In Benin As Edo Lawmakers Attempt To Remove Speaker

... As Plot To Sack Obaseki Reaches Dizzying Height

-The Daily Crucible

Tension takes  the better part of Thursday morning in Benin City, the Edo State capital following alleged move by  the All Progressives Congress (APC) to remove Francis Okiye, the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly and replace him with Yekini Idiaye.

The Deputy Speaker was impeached on Wednesday in a questionable circumstance by seven lawmakers loyal to Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Thick air of pprehension hovers around the Edo State House of Assembly premise, Benin - City, as dozens of armed security personnel lay siege at the facility.

It was alleged that if the plot to dethrone the Speaker succeeds and Idiaye’s election as the new Speaker, it will pave way for the planned swearing in of the 14 members-elect who were yet to be inagurated since the House was declared open on June 17 last year by Governor Godwin Obaseki

The 14 - members-elect yet to be sworn - in are Vincent Uwadiae, Ovia North-East II; Ugiagbe Dumez, Ovia North-East I; Washington Osifo, Uhunmwode; Victor Edoror, Esan Central; Kingsley Ugabi, Etsako East and Michael Ohio-Ezomo, Owan West.

Others are Sunday Aghedo, Ovia South-West; Chris Okaeben, Oredo West; Crosby Eribo, Egor; Seid Aliyu Oshiomhole, Etsako West II; Oshomah Ahmed, Etsako Central and Ganiyu Audu, Etsako West I.

The tension heightened when Obaseki stormed the Assembly complex with retinue of supporters who kept chanting his praises and declaring that "Edo is not Lagos" slogans.

The Governor who addressed his suporters said: “I want to assure you that as governor of the state, I will do everything within my power to protect the sovereignty of the House.

“Nigeria is governed by the constitution and me. Mr. President has always said we must follow the rule of law and do things according to the law.

“Nobody is above the Constitution of our country and so go about your regular duty as a parliament, the way Constitution prescribed.

“For us as Executive, we will use the instrument available to us constitutionally to protect the House and the state.”

Also, the Speaker, Frank Okiye restated the allegation of a plan to invade the Assembly by the elected lawmakers.

The Daily Crucible recalls that on Wednesday, the Edo State House of Assembly raised an alarm, alleging that the Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma and other APC Leaders were plotting to forcefully take over the Assembly.

The Edo lawnakers claimed the APC leaders had  imported a fake mace into the state to perfect the act.

According to them,  the plan was being hatched in connivance with the impeached Deputy Speaker, Yekini Idiaye, who had also declared support for the governorship candidate of APC, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

However, a source in Benin city claimed that Speaker Frank Okiye  and his Deputy  have been dethroned by 17 Anti - Obaseki legislators  and immediately replaced by Victor  Edoror in a secret location, who in turn, swears in the 14 lawmakers long denied inauguration by Governor

The Daily Crucible learnt that as the 14 lawmakers took their oath of office at the hidden location in Benin, the state capital, they have been mandated to remove Obaseki aheadd of the governorship election slated for September.
