A palpable spell of uncertainty has sorrounded the planned state - owned Biomedical Laboratory Testing centre for COVID - 19 in Ogun State, which was expected to have commenced testing of suspected cases not later than yesterday.

Many people who wanted to be on the safe side and desirous of finding out their Coronavirus status early enough by patronizing the facility without subjecting themselves to the pains of going to either Lagos or Abuja for the same test, had their hope dashed at the weekend.

Governor Dapo Abiodun had on March 31st in Ikenne while inaugurating the two wings of  128 -  bed  COVID - 19 Isolation Centre at the HID Awolowo Model School, Ikenne,  assured that the State's Biomedical Laboratory for testing of suspected cases would  be ready for use not later than yesterday.

Abiodun said the Laboratory (the location undisclosed) which was in its advanced stage of establishment when completed, would also optimize the test turn-around time and fast-track the treatment of positive cases.

"Arrangements are at an advanced stage to establish our own biomedical laboratory so that we can test suspected cases in the state without going to Lagos or Abuja.

"This laboratory which will be in place by this weekend will minimize the test turn-around time which currently is between 3 – 5 days and fast-track the treatment of positive cases.

"It will also reduce period of apprehension and anxiety for those suspected of infection and their relations," Abiodun had said.

But the set date assured by the Governor had come and passed without anything being said about the Laboratory, whether it has been completed or if testing has commenced there as pledged.

Abiodun who addressed reporters at his Iperu country home in Remo North Local Government Area on the eve of the total lockdown of Ogun State last Friday over COVID - 19 pandemic, was silent about the said Biomedical laboratory.

An Ogun resident who identified himself as Deji, told our reporter that he was glad when he first heard that  the testing for the pandemic virus could be done in Ogun State in a Biomedical laboratory reportedly being set up by Governor Dapo  Abiodun but was disappointed later when nothing like that happened at the promised date.

He urged the Governor to work harder towards fulfilling this all important promise because of the pivotal role such facility will play in the battle to contain the spread of the Coronavirus spread in the state and the nation.

The Daily Crucible called and sent SMS to the Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Communications, Hon. Remmy Hazzan, on Saturday to know if the laboratory had been completed and if it had also commenced testing of suspected COVID - 19 cases but there is yet no response from the former Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly as at Sunday morning to the several calls and SMS earlier put through to him.
