Visiting  15 -  member medical team from China arrived the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja on a chattered Air Peace aircraft on Wednesday  despite stiff oppositions to it by Nigerians, especially the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA).

The medical expatriates, who are experts in infectious diseases, respiratory illness, intensive care, cardiology, neurology, general surgery and anesthesiology, would be placed on a 14 - day mandatory isolation.

The Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Social Media, Ms Lauretta Onochie, said on her official social media handle.

Lauretta added that the team would be subjected to tests  to ascertain their Coronavirus status before allowing them to function in the country,

"Chinese Medical team, experienced in handling the COVIDー19 Pandemic, have arrived Nigeria
They will be in isolation for 2 weeks and be tested for the Corona virus before they begin their intervention," Lauretta twitted.

Also,  the Presidential Task Force on COVID - 19 which briefed the press on Wednesday in Abuja said the Chinese doctors were around and would be assisting the Nigerian Government to contain and manage the Coronavirus pandemic.

The minister of state for health, Senator Olorunnimbe Mamora, who disclosed this,  said the experts arrived in Nigeria alongside the equipment needed to curb the virus.

The minister of health, Osagie Ehanire, did not attend the briefing as  he reportedly went to  the airport to receive the team, having told Nigerians earlier that the medical experts would be coming into the country to support its fight against COVID-19.

The NMA had earlier expressed its opposition to the move.

They described it as “a thing of embarrassment to the membership of the Association and other health workers who are giving their best in the fight against COVID-19 pandemic under deplorable working conditions.”

The Daily Crucible recalls that the team are in Nigeria not  as doctors as they cannot practice in the country, but were expected to have come with their drugs, and equipment to carry out Covid-19 tests purposely on the staff of the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) in the country.

The Executive Director, CCECC, Mr Jacques Liao, had in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja said the medical team would  come with 16-ton test kits, ventilators, disinfection machine, disposable medical masks, drugs, infrared thermometer and other items ordered by Nigerian Government.

“All members of the working team have tested negative for COVID-19 and shall commence their stay in Nigeria by spending 14 days in quarantine," Liao had said.

According to the Director,  following the directive of the Embassy of China in Nigeria and in response to the Federal Government’s request, the team may share with their Nigerian counterparts effective methods on COVID-19 containment and management.
