Anxiety Over Health of Chief Richard Akinjide

   • Akinjide, SAN

There were concerns in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Monday and up to the early hours of Tuesday  over the health of the second Republic Minister, Chief Richard Osuolale Akinjide, who is said to be in an intensive care unit (ICU)of an undisclosed health facility.

Medics, The Daily Crucible gathered, were battling to keep the octogenarian alive who played a prominent role in the outcome of the very controversial election that saw Alhaji Shehu Shagari emerging President in 1979 as against the people's expectation that it should have been Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

Many were praying that Baba comes out of the ICU alive but one was heard telling others that he had "passed on" and should not keep the prayer going  anymore, an unauthorized source said. His last birthday was 88.

The Daily Crucible recalls that the former Attorney General and Minister of Justice in the Second Republic,  was hospitalised at the University College Hospital, Ibadan,  in 2016. The first Republic Education Minister was kept at the private suite of that teaching hospital and discharged after spending weeks there .

As an Attorney General of the Federation & Minister of Justice during the administration of Alhaji Shehu Shagari, Nigeria temporarily reversed executions of armed robbers, abolished the decree barring exiles from returning to the country and also knew about the  “Ghana Must Go” policy of Shagari which caused the eviction of many illegal foreign nationals, particularly Ghanaians, from Nigeria.
