We'll Touch 20 LGAs, Border Communities To Immunise Our Children, Give Iron - Folate To Pregnant Women - Coker

The Commissioner - designate, Dr. Tomi Coker, on Friday disclosed that the Ogun State Health ministry would touch the 20 Local Government Areas of the state as well as border communities to Immunise 1,023,444 children between 6 and 59 months old this January.

Coker also disclosed that over one million pregnant women would also be given Iron - Folate supplementation and Antenatal care within the same period, adding that there would be routine immunization of "missed children."

She said the essence of the programme is to achieve 50% reduction in child and maternal mortality rate in Ogun this year 2020.

The Commissioner - designate who made this known on Friday while briefing reporters at the conference room of the Ministry of Health, Oke - Mosan, ahead of the 2019/2020 Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Week(MNCHW), said over 200 post have been mounted towards accomplishing the said objectives.

She noted that the First Lady, Mrs Bamidele Abiodun, would flag - off the MNCHW on Monday, explaining that it is a nationwide programme designed to reduce the unacceptably high number of illnesses and deaths among women of child bearing age, children and new born in the country.

She said: "During this round of MNCHW, one million, twenty three thousand, four hundred and forty four (1,023,444) children between 6 months and 59 months will be supplemented with vitamin A.  

"Also over one million three hundred women of child bearing age will also be reached with cost effective intervention such as iron-folate and exclusive breast feeding for nursing mothers.  

"There would also be a routine immunization for missed children and mothers according to the national immunization schedule.  

"The benefit of all these is that we want  a 50 per cent reduction in birth mortality rate.  

"We would be in all our 20 LGAs and we would have more than 200 post across the state to do justice to the immunization.  

"The essence of this is to ensure that every citizen have access to the intervention.

"This conference is to brief you on the the implementation of 2019/2020 maternal, new born and child health week activities in Ogun state.  

"The first lady, Bamidele Abiodun will start off the programme on the 10th of January, 2020.

"The implementation will commence immediately after the flag off in all health facilities spread across the twenty LGAs of Ogun state from the 13th to 17th January, 2020. 

"I will like to encourage mothers and caregivers to ensure they avail their wards of this immense opportunities being provided free by His excellency the governor of Ogun state, Prince Dr. Dapo Abiodun."
